Christopher North, the founding keyboardist for 1970s and ’80s rock band Ambrosia, has died at age 75, the band announced Monday on their Facebook page. The band did not disclose a location or an official cause of death.
Career and contributions
North co-founded Ambrosia in 1970 alongside David Pack, bassist Joe Puerta and drummer Burleigh Drummond. A keyboardist known for lush piano lines and soaring organ swells, he contributed to several of the band’s most memorable hits. Though he stepped away from the group in 1977, he later returned and was part of recordings including “Biggest Part of Me” and “You’re the Only Woman (You & I).”

Ambrosia confirmed North’s passing on their Facebook page, writing, “We will always remember ‘Northwind’ for his fiery, ‘intense’ stage presence — a legacy that began when he was first discovered playing in a dimly lit room, his organ topped with a bottle of wine.”
The band added, “Christopher North’s work did more than just fill airwaves; it created ‘aural landscapes’ that balanced virtuosity with soulful, radio-friendly hooks. We celebrate a true craftsman of the classic rock era whose lush piano lines and soaring organ swells will remain timeless. He was truly one of a kind, and loved dearly by his fans and bandmates.”
Ambrosia lead vocalist David Pack also referenced North’s recent health struggles in an October post, noting a “brave and successful battle with throat cancer” and reporting that North had been hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle while walking. Pack’s post is available on his Facebook.

The band did not provide further details about the circumstances of North’s death. Reports indicate he had faced health challenges in recent years, but no confirmed cause has been released.
