Robin Windsor, the 44‑year‑old professional dancer best known for his appearances on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, was found dead in a hotel bed in February 2024. At an inquest, jurors heard that Windsor left notes describing the profound effect his exit from the show had on him.
Inquest findings
The court was told that Windsor left a note in which he wrote: “This all really started when I lost my job on Strictly and have been fighting it ever since. The way they treated me destroyed me . . . It started me on the road I’m still on.” The contents included further reflections on his struggle, saying he lived “permanently in a dark place” and that he “couldn’t live like this anymore.”
Police evidence given at the inquest stated the dancer was found in a hotel bed by a receptionist and that police and medics were called to the scene in February 2024. Officers located two notes; a second note, addressed to his ex, actor Ollie Augustin, read: “I need you to understand that this is not your fault!”
The inquest heard that a post‑mortem examination concluded Windsor’s death was likely an overdose on drugs and alcohol.
Career and reaction
Windsor, who appeared on Strictly Come Dancing for four seasons between 2010 and 2014, partnered with Patsy Kensit, Anita Dobson, Lisa Riley and Deborah Meaden during his time on the programme. He left the show after suffering a slipped disc that left him paralysed for four days, an injury that contributed to his decision to quit.
The news of his death prompted an outpouring of grief from fans and peers. Fellow professional Kristina Rihanoff gave evidence at the inquest, telling the court that the BBC show “could be a very lonely space with not much support” and describing the “very severe” psychological impact leaving the programme had on Windsor. She said it was “heartbreaking” to see him so “sad, subdued and burdened” when he could not do what he loved because of his injury.
Tributes and final notes
Those who knew Windsor and members of the public expressed shock at his sudden death in 2024 and reflected on his career as a celebrated dancer. The inquest set out the messages he left behind and the circumstances surrounding his death, without offering further explanation beyond the post‑mortem finding.
