Greg Brown, a founding member and guitarist of 1990s rock band Cake, has died. The band announced his passing on social media on Saturday (February 7), saying Brown died after a “brief illness.” Exact details of the illness, and the precise date and age at the time of his death, have not been disclosed; he was thought to be in his mid-50s.

Career and contributions
Brown co-founded Cake in Sacramento, California, in 1991 alongside singer John McCrea, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, drummer Frank French and bassist Shon Meckfessel. He is credited with playing on Cakes early albums, including Motorcade of Generosity and Fashion Nugget, and he contributed to the bands sound during its formative years.
Brown left Cake in 1998 and went on to play with other projects, including the band Deathray and Homie, the latter of which featured Rivers Cuomo. He later reunited with Cake to play on the 2011 album Showroom of Compassion. Brown also released a solo EP in 2023.
