Sarah Aspin has died at her home in Swillington, Leeds. West Yorkshire Police say officers were called to the address on Saturday 7 February following a concern for safety report; a woman was treated by paramedics at the scene and died a short time later. The force has described the death as “unexplained” and enquiries are ongoing.
Circumstances and police response
West Yorkshire Police said officers were called to an address in Primrose Hill Drive at 6.38am on Saturday, 7 February, following a concern for safety report. A woman was treated by paramedics at the scene but “died a short time later. Her death is currently being treated as unexplained,” a force spokesperson said.
Neighbours reported seeing emergency services at the flat over the weekend. One neighbour described seeing police “swarming the property” at around 8am and later said they saw what they believed to be a body bag being carried out. It is understood a person was arrested during the incident, but not in relation to the death.
Connection to Blake Fielder-Civil and Amy Winehouse
Aspin had been publicly linked to Blake Fielder-Civil and, during the early 2010s, found herself caught in a love triangle involving Fielder-Civil and the late singer Amy Winehouse after meeting Fielder-Civil in rehab. She was the mother of two children with Blake: a son born in May 2011 and a daughter born in April 2013. The couple met in 2009 and their relationship continued on an on/off basis, according to reports.
Neighbours’ reactions
Several neighbours provided recollections to local reporters. One, who did not wish to be named, said: “I was passing by the flat at around 8am on Saturday. That’s when I saw the police swarming the property and I thought to myself, something was up. Sarah lived in that house alone but a man I believed to be her partner would often go round. I went past again at 12pm and I saw a body bag being carried out of the house. They hadn’t put up a cordon or tape or anything. It just seemed like they were searching the house. It is unclear what has happened, but it is tragic.”
Another neighbour recalled small acts of neighbourliness: “She once knocked on my door asking for cheese,” and added: “What has happened is sad. It has rocked the community, it is a nice, quiet area. We have lots of elderly residents, and young families. We are all friendly, we feel safe living here. Seeing police like that isn’t a common sight.”
The police statement and neighbours’ accounts were reported by local news outlets. Further enquiries by West Yorkshire Police are continuing.
