Mathis was a distinctive presence in Corpus Christi, known for his extravagant fashion sense. He frequently rode a bicycle along the bayfront dressed in bright colors — blue, red and purple among them — and was recognized for wearing a cowboy hat and pointed-toe boots. He often adorned his fingers with large rings described in reports as golf ball-sized and wore a belt buckle the size of a dinner plate.

A U.S. Army veteran, Mathis served in Vietnam. Over decades he became a familiar local personality, often referred to by his nickname, “Pointy Boots.”

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our beloved, Ronnie ‘Pointy Boots’ Mathis,” the GoFundMe statement said. “Ronnie was a true community icon. Known and loved by so many, he had a presence you simply couldn’t miss. Whether he was riding through town in his signature style or stopping to connect with others, Ronnie brought joy, confidence, and unforgettable energy everywhere he went. If you ever saw him, you never forgot him.”
