Syracuse career and honors

A celebrated Syracuse University quarterback, Rex Culpepper played for the team from 2017 to 2020 and appeared in 30 games. He was honored with the Jim DaRin Courage Award after overcoming testicular cancer, a battle he faced while playing for the Orange.

The team posted a March 16 statement on its official X account: “Rex lived his life with endless passion, having overcome cancer at the age of 20 while playing for the Orange. Appearing in 30 games, Rex played football as fierce as he lived life.” The statement concluded, “Our hearts are with the Culpepper family & all those who loved him.”

Tributes from loved ones

Less than one month before the accident, Rex proposed to Savanna Morgan. In a March 16 Instagram post, Morgan wrote: “No one expects to meet the love of your life and lose them in only 6 short years after meeting. Rex didnt always believe in soulmates but towards the end he told me that he didnt realize what having a soulmate felt like until we felt like extensions of each other. And one thing about us is that we lived every single day like it was our last.”

“You dont just meet people like Rex all the time,” she added. “He was one in a billion.” The post included photos of the couple and was shared publicly on Instagram.

Rex Culpepper’s death at 28 follows his widely reported battle with testicular cancer in 2018 and his achievements on the football field. Family, teammates and friends have expressed mourning and remembrance in public statements and social posts.
