Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling, known as Mel Schilling on screen, has died aged 54 following a battle with cancer. Her husband posted an emotional statement on Instagram confirming her passing and sharing details of her final moments.
Family statement and tributes
A statement on the star’s Instagram page, written by her husband Gareth, read: “Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love.”
Gareth described a final, private moment in which, despite the effects of her illness, she summoned the strength to deliver a message for their daughter and him: “In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life.”
The statement paid tribute to Mel’s courage and care for others: “This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming.”
Gareth also thanked the Married at First Sight team for their support and concluded the post with a farewell: “Goodbye, my love. My one. Until we meet again.”
Illness and career highlights
Mel revealed she had been diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023. In a subsequent Instagram update she said the disease had spread to her lungs and the left side of her brain and that, despite radiotherapy, her oncology team had told her “there is nothing further they can do.” She wrote: “My light is starting to fade – and quickly.”
Schilling first became known to audiences on the Australian edition of Married at First Sight and later appeared on the UK version of the show. She was 54.
Remembering her life
In his Instagram statement, Gareth described Mel to family and friends as “our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate,” and asked that those wishing to honour her remember to “live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff.”
