Ian von Memerty, the South African television and theatre figure known for his energetic stage presence, died by suicide at the age of 61 in Johannesburg in the early hours of 23 February 2026, his family confirmed.
Passing and family statement
A spokesperson for von Memerty issued a brief statement: “We are sad to announce that our beloved Ian von Memerty passed away at the age of 61 in Johannesburg in the early hours of 23 February 2026. As a family, we have done everything we can to love & respect him on his journey. We ask for privacy & respect as we deal with our own pain, having lost someone we’ve loved very much.”
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Vivienne Lawrence, and their two children, Oscar and Kasvia.
Career and notable work
Von Memerty was a household name in South African entertainment. He hosted Strictly Come Dancing from 2006 to 2008 and served as a judge on SA’s Got Talent from 2009 to 2012. Early in his career he co-hosted Muzik a la Carte with Sandy Ngema.
He was also celebrated for his stage work, winning 15 national theatre awards. Notable productions included A Handful of Keys, Hollywood Rocks, Broadway Rocks, Buddy and Grease.
In later years von Memerty produced and presented the series “Dying for a Better Life,” posted on his Facebook and YouTube accounts. The series drew divided opinion in South Africa; in his own words it was “a series where I look at the facts, choices, realities and responsibilities around old age and dying, and my belief that self-deliverance is a moral and legitimate option.”
