Eric Dane, the actor best known for his work on Grey’s Anatomy, died last month at age 53 after a battle with ALS. His wife, actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, told TODAY.com she is helping their teenage daughters navigate their grief while honoring Danes strength and legacy.
Family response and coping
Gayheart said, “Im doing the best I can,” as she described supporting their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14. The couple married in 2004 and separated in 2018 but never divorced; they remained close and continued to raise their children together.
“Its a lot to navigate,” Gayheart said of Danes passing. “As a mother, its heartbreaking because my daughters are devastated, as am I. Its a very nuanced, complex thing grief and it comes in waves.” She added that the family finds comfort in reminding each other that “hes not gone. Hes still here. You can still talk to him. Hes with you, even though hes not here physically. Hes with you in spirit and soul.”
Honoring his legacy and the voice initiative
Gayheart said she tells her daughters that Dane “really wanted them to know that they could face any adversity in the way he faced this disease: with strength, but also compassion.” She noted that talking about him “doesn’t always take away the tears,” but that remembering “what he stood for and what he would have wanted” helps them through difficult days.
One notable aspect of Danes final months was the permanent loss of his voice. Recordings of Danes speech were used to create an AI voice clone by ElevenLabs. Although he was not able to put that AI voice to use before his death, Gayheart said she is hopeful the technology will help other families and become part of “[Eric’s legacy].” “Were trying to honor him every day,” she said, adding that she and the girls try to recall happier moments and the lighter sides of his life when grief feels overwhelming.
Rebecca Gayhearts account to TODAY.com offers a close look at a family working through loss together, focused on preserving memories and the values Dane embodied.
