Brenda Edwards, the TV presenter, actress and singer, became visibly emotional on Loose Women on Monday, February 2, as she spoke about her late son, Jamal Edwards.

On air reaction

Edwards, 56, broke down in tears while discussing how she continues to grieve for Jamal four years after his death. She told co‑panellists Kaye Adams, Sue Cleaver and Nadia Sawalha that there are times she can prepare herself to speak about her son and other times when she cannot. Her fellow panellists and the live show responded immediately — Kaye Adams placed a comforting hand on her arm and the programme cut to an advert break.

About Jamal Edwards and the circumstances of his death

Jamal Edwards, an entrepreneur, DJ and founder of SBTV, died on February 20, 2022 at the age of 31. The article reports he died of cardiac arrhythmia, and that in June 2022 a coroner ruled the 31‑year‑old’s death followed a cardiac arrest brought on after taking cocaine.

Public response

Some viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to express concern that the subject of grief was discussed with Edwards on the panel that day. One post read: “How appalling from Loose Women using Brenda’s grief as topical fodder. Very uncomfortable watch. My mum lost her son/ my brother and was appalled. Shame on you @ITV.” Another user asked: “Has anyone even thought about Brenda when they chose today’s subjects?”

Edwards has previously said she wanted to help drive conversation about the unpredictability of recreational drugs following her son’s death. She is mother to Jamal and his sister, Tanisha Edwards.
