Blake Garrett, a former child actor best known for his role in the 2006 film How to Eat Fried Worms, died on Feb. 8 at the age of 33, his mother confirmed. His family has not released a cause of death.

Garrett’s mother, Carol Garrett, confirmed his death to TMZ. She said the family is awaiting autopsy results and that a cause has not yet been shared. According to Carol, Garrett had been living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the past three years.

Carol told outlets that Garrett went to the emergency room after experiencing intense pain and was later diagnosed with shingles. She said he had become sober in recent years and was living happily in Tulsa.

Career highlights

Garrett made his onscreen debut in 2004 in the Barney & Friends special Barney’s Colorful World, Live!, a stage production he toured with for roughly 18 months. He recalled that audiences abroad were often struck by his nearly white hair.

His best-known screen role was as Plug in the 2006 family film How to Eat Fried Worms, adapted from Thomas Rockwell’s 1974 children’s book. In the film Garrett played the bully’s henchman and was part of an ensemble that won the Young Artist Award for Best Young Ensemble in a Feature Film in 2007.

Garrett spoke in past interviews about filming the movie, including anecdotes about riding a bike on set and specific scenes that were memorable to him.
