A Legacy Beyond the Fairway

While known for his decades-long commitment to golf, Dick McBride’s impact resonated far beyond the sports world. His most remarkable achievements stemmed from his deep Catholic faith. Alongside his wife of 53 years, Barbara, McBride was appointed by Pope John Paul II to be an Auditor to the World Synod of Bishops—the first time laypeople were invited to such an event. The couple spoke to 215 Bishops and the Pope about the role of family in the church, with Mother Teresa in attendance. This led to a five-year term on the Pontifical Council for Marriage and Family.

McBride’s contributions to his local community were equally profound. He was a beloved dentist for over 40 years and, with his wife, opened their home to more than 60 pregnant women in need through the Shepherding Home Program. He was later inducted into the St. Anthony High School Hall of Fame.

Tributes to a Mentor

The loss is being felt deeply by the athletes he mentored. Moore League champion Aundie Owens shared a moving tribute, reflecting on his lasting impact even after her collegiate career. “The impact he’s impressed on me is a testament to his authenticity and genuine love for others,” Owens wrote. “Even states away, he’d still be keeping track of my scores, cheering me on, and giving me tips… I hope he’s proud of the impact he’s made on all of us.”

McBride is survived by five children, 13 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. A service will be held at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Long Beach on Saturday, Dec. 6th.
