Actress Mary Beth Hurt, known for her work on stage and screen in films such as Interiors and The World According to Garp, has died, her family told TMZ. She was 79.

Death and family statement

According to her daughter, Molly Schrader, Hurt passed away yesterday morning in Jersey City from Alzheimer’s. She was surrounded by family, including her husband, Oscar‑nominated writer‑director Paul Schrader.

On Facebook, Paul and Molly reportedly released a joint statement: “She was an actress, a wife, a sister, a mother, an aunt, a friend, and she took on all those roles with grace and kind ferocity.” They added, “Although we’re all grieving there is some comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and reunited with her sisters in peace.”

Career and legacy

Hurt worked across stage, film and television. Her film credits included Interiors and The World According to Garp, and she collaborated with her husband on the films Affliction and Light Sleeper. On Broadway she earned three Tony nominations for her performances in Crimes of the Heart, Trelawny of the Wells and Benefactors.

She is survived by family members who issued the statement announcing her passing.
