Melvin Foster, 59, a former Dallas Cowboys player who later served as a deputy sheriff in Harris County, has died suddenly on Sunday, his obituary and colleagues said. No cause of death has been announced.

Football career and community service

Foster began his football career at Yates High School in Texas and went on to play collegiately at Iowa, where he was part of the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten Championship team in 1991. He joined the Dallas Cowboys’ roster in 1992 and spent a year with the team before choosing to leave professional football to focus on serving his community.

After his playing days, Foster served in the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for almost 15 years, rising to the rank of deputy sheriff and working as a Field Training Officer. His football achievements were also recognised when he was named to the inaugural class of the Houston ISD Hall of Honors in 2021.

Tributes and obituary

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez paid tribute to Foster on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “We’re saddened by the recent and unexpected passing of our teammate @HCSOTexas Deputy Melvin Foster.” Gonzalez added that Foster “was an incredible man and public servant” who “leaves behind a strong legacy.”

Foster’s obituary noted that his “legacy continues on in the lives he touched.” It described him as a “devoted Christian father who cherished his children, grandchildren, and extended family,” and recalled his love of baking and barbecuing and his generosity in sharing food with others.

“Melvin proudly served as a Harris County Deputy Sheriffs Officer and Field Training Officer for 15 years, earning the respect of his colleagues for his professionalism and motivation,” the obituary reads. “His dedication to public service left a lasting impact on the community and the deputies he trained. His absence will undoubtedly be felt throughout his district.”
