Shibayama Tsutomu, the celebrated Japanese animation director best known for his longtime work on Doraemon, has died at the age of 84. Ajia-do Animation Works said he passed away from lung cancer on March 6, 2026; his last rites were performed privately.

Career and contributions
Shibayama began his career at Toei Animation in 1963 and later worked at A Production, today known as Shin-Ei Animation. He co-founded Ajia-do Animation Works in 1978 alongside Osamu Kobayashi and Michishiro Yamada. He directed the 1979 Doraemon television series and led 22 feature films based on the franchise, overseeing the series for more than two decades.
Beyond Doraemon, Shibayama’s credits include work on Lupin III, Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Zorori, and Chibi Maruko-chan. His storytelling and approach to character helped shape the style and international appeal of the projects he guided.
Awards, recognition and legacy
In recognition of his long service to Japanese animation, Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs presented Shibayama with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Colleagues and a new generation of animators have cited his work as influential in raising the profile of anime worldwide.

Ajia-do Animation Works issued an official statement announcing his death: “Shibayama Tsutomu, the animation director who oversaw the Doraemon series for over 20 years, died on the 6th from lung cancer.” The studio said his last rites were held privately.
