Dave Jamieson, the veteran broadcaster who rose to prominence in the early days of BBC local radio and later presented for BBC Radio 1, has died in Spain at the age of 76. The date of death was not disclosed; his passing was announced by Boom Radio, where he had been a host since the station launched in 2021.

Announcement

Boom Radio confirmed Jamieson’s death on its Facebook page. The station wrote:

“We are so sorry to share the news of the death of Dave Jamieson. He was 76.

“Dave was with Boom since the start and most recently hosted our Sunday morning programme – after a lifetime on air.

“He will be much-missed.”

Career

Jamieson began his broadcasting career in his mid-teens on hospital radio and went on to become a prominent voice in the formative years of BBC local radio, including the broadcaster’s first regional segment in Leicester. He made guest appearances on Radio 1 Club and for BBC Scotland and worked on commercial stations including Birmingham’s BRMB.

He also played a role in launching Radio Clyde in Glasgow and Mercia Sound in Coventry. On television in the 1970s he worked as an out-of-sight announcer on ATV before moving to Central. In recent years he lived in Nerja on the Costa del Sol and presented Boom Radio’s Sunday morning programme.

Tributes

Messages of condolence accompanied Boom Radio’s announcement. Former colleague Paul Savory wrote: “I’m gutted. Dave was one of my best friends back in the BRMB days. I helped him on many occasions to write questions for his Six of the Best Quiz. I last spoke to him at Christmastime. RIP my old friend.”

Another former colleague added: “So sorry to hear this sad news. Dave was one of the radio greats, starting his career in hospital radio in Edinburgh. I have many happy memories of working with him on Heriot-Watt Student Television – he was on the Electrical Engineering course, and I was doing a Business Organisation degree. We’re all going to miss your dulcet tones, Dave. Rest in Peace, my friend.”

The family and Boom Radio have not disclosed further details about the circumstances or an exact date of death.
