Danilo Mariano Leão Laureano — known professionally as MC Danilo Boladão — has died in Brazil after suffering three cardiac arrests in the early hours of Wednesday morning. He was 47.

Circumstances of his death

According to accounts from his family, Danilo woke feeling unwell and struggling to breathe before neighbours were called to help. He was taken to an emergency care unit in Santos, where his widow, Thays Kolben, said he had already suffered one cardiac arrest and then experienced two more. He died at around 4.40am.

Doctors have said the fatal heart attack may have been linked to thrombosis, but post-mortem results are still pending and the exact cause of death has not been confirmed.

Health background and personal details

Danilo had lived with complications from diabetes since 2006 and had undergone several amputations to his lower body, including toes and part of his heel. In the days before his death his wife said he had an infection for which he took antibiotics and that subsequent tests appeared stable.

He is survived by his wife Thays Kolben, an 18-year-old daughter from a previous marriage and a grandson.

Career and tributes

Danilo built a strong online following, with more than 100,000 Instagram followers, and was widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the favela funk scene. He performed as part of the duo “Danilo e Fabinho,” formed with his childhood friend Fabinho. His career was interrupted by imprisonment, but he mounted a comeback and toured with Fabinho after his release in 2004.

Following the news of his death, Fabinho posted a photograph of the pair embracing and wrote: “What kind of pain is this?” His widow also spoke publicly about the sudden nature of his passing.
